Christa Gecheva: It’s Her Time
CHRISTA GECHEVA
The Moment to Bet on Yourself
After years helping others pursue their dreams in tennis, Christa Gecheva made a decision that changed the direction of her life. Today she is part of the new generation shaping the future of professional pickleball.
In sports, there are moments that redefine a life. Decisions that require leaving comfort behind to pursue something bigger.
For Christa Gecheva, that moment came when she realized she had spent years helping others chase their dreams—while her own waited quietly in the background.
Born in Bulgaria and raised in London, Christa grew up surrounded by discipline, sport, and a strong intellectual curiosity. Her journey eventually brought her to the United States, where she earned a Division I tennis scholarship at the University of Wyoming (2011–2015) while studying Pre-Veterinary Science.
Her academic path later expanded with a Master’s degree in Journalism and an MBA, building a profile that reflects both intellectual ambition and athletic discipline—a combination that would later shape her transition into professional pickleball.
The Decision That Changed Everything
For several years, sport remained at the center of her life—though from a different perspective.
Christa worked as an Assistant Coach at both the University of Wyoming and Northern Arizona University, dedicating her time to developing young athletes and helping them pursue their goals in tennis.
She also spent nearly six years traveling with high-level junior tennis players, guiding them through tournaments and the demanding journey of competitive development.
But as rewarding as the experience was, a realization began to grow stronger.
She had been investing her energy helping others pursue their dreams—while quietly postponing her own.
In 2022, she made the decision that would redefine her career.
Christa stepped away from that chapter of her life and committed fully to pickleball—a sport that was rapidly gaining momentum in the United States but still required courage and conviction from those willing to build a professional path within it.
The transition proved to be the right one.

Interview
“For most of my life, I made decisions based on financial fear rather than trusting myself.”
Dink Authority:
Take us back to the beginning — how did your tennis background shape your pickleball game?
Christa Gecheva:
Tennis gave me a lot. My slice translates very well to pickleball and creates angles that can be difficult for opponents to defend. At the same time, some parts of my game still require adjustments. My backhand can sometimes be a bit risky, so I’ve been working on improving my drop shot and overall control. Like any transition between sports, it takes time to find the right balance.
DA:
What does a typical training routine look like for you?
CG:
When I’m not traveling for tournaments, I try to maintain a balance between strength training and on-court work several days a week. Recovery is also essential. Pickleball has a long season, and managing your body properly is just as important as improving your technical skills.
DA:
Was there a moment when you knew you had to fully commit to pickleball?
CG:
Yes. I realized I had spent years helping others pursue their dreams while postponing my own. Eventually I had to ask myself a simple question: if not now, when? That moment pushed me to finally trust myself and take the leap.
DA:
How has your mindset around competition evolved?
CG:
It’s been a journey of self-discovery. Meditation, mentorship, and simply gaining experience on tour have helped me understand the importance of staying calm under pressure. Pickleball is a very strategic sport, and emotional control plays a huge role in performance.
DA:
Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future?
CG:
I want to keep improving and competing at the highest level possible. At the same time, I’m excited about the international growth of pickleball. Europe has enormous potential, and I would love to play a role in helping expand the sport globally.
Final Note
For Christa Gecheva, success in pickleball is not simply about wins or rankings.
It is about something deeper.
The courage to walk away from certainty.
The discipline to rebuild from the beginning.
And the conviction to trust that the dream you postponed might still be waiting for you.
Sometimes the most important victory in sports happens long before the match even begins.
It happens the moment you decide to bet on yourself.
